North Berwick, Scotland

Just a 33 minute train ride outside of Edinburgh, is a wonderful town called North Berwick
(Pronounced: burr ik, or ber ik depending upon who you ask).

We arrived at low tide and spent about an hour exploring the beach.  The rocks are covered in different types of sea weed and some sea life (snails, etc).  They are on different areas of the beach and extend quite a way.  During high tide, they are completely covered by water.

We could see the Firth of Forth, Bass Rock and other islands in the distance.  There are boating tours to the islands but we did not explore that option.

It was a beautiful day so many people were out walking their dog and some people were sitting on the beach in chairs.  A school group of children were out walking on the rocks.  The local people were loving the weather.

We walked up to High Street for a wonderful lunch at an Italian restaurant.  It was an excellent lunch!

The we set out for a place called “The Law”.  It is a mountain made from volcanic rock with a monument on the top.  Even the trip to the base was uphill.  Kevin and Kristopher set off to conquer the mountain will mom and I stayed on the picnic tables to digest our lunch.  It took them about an hour and 15 minutes to climb to the top and return to the bottom.  There are 7 wild ponies that live on the mountain that Kristopher was able to get near them.

Both Law and the beach front are on the John Muir Way.  This is a hiking trail here in Scotland and there are signs all around directing people along the path.  Based on the small part we walked here in North Berwick, it is not difficult terrain and offers the chance to add to the walk (Law is not included in the walk, but the trail circles around part of the bottom).

The view from the top is spectacular.  Kristopher was able to see ocean covering the rocks he had been climbing on during the morning hours.

We did not take time to view the golf courses, the castles nearby or the boat tours.

We could easily spend a week here.
